BERKELEY HEIGHTS – Summit Medical Group hosts “Live well. Play well. A Celebration of Sport through Art,” opening Friday, September 17, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. with music and refreshments, in the Lawrence Lower lobby Gallery, 1 Diamond Hill Road. The reception and exhibit are open to the public. The exhibit runs through January 2011.
Experience decades of sports through paint, photography and mixed media in this exhibition celebrating the active life. Sports legend Lavone “Pepper” Davis of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, will be on hand to chat with guests about being the inspiration for the movie, “A League of Their Own” and autograph her new book, Dirt in the Skirt.
The exhibit features pieces by several artists known for their work in sports, including the artwork of James Fiorentino who spans the entire spectrum of traditional art. He is the youngest artist inducted into the prestigious New York Society of Illustrators and to be featured in the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. Fiorentino has painted and illustrated some of the most famous sports figures including Yogi Berra, Cal Ripken Jr., Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams, Greg LeMond as well as many contemporary athletes. His work is part of the permanent collection in the United States Sports Academy Museum and has also been displayed at the National Basketball Hall of Fame, The National Museum of Art & Sport (NAMOS), Cycling Hall of Fame, Roberto Clemente Museum and The Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center. Most recently, Fiorentino deigned the cover for Pepper Davis’s new book, Dirt in the Skirt.
