Celebrated Baseball Artist James Fiorentino to Open Large Exhibit in Central Jersey May 5

If James Fiorentino isn’t the greatest living baseball artist on the planet, he’s pretty darn close.

Readers of this column can see for themselves when he opens a four-room show at the Studio 7 Fine Art Gallery in Bernardsville, NJ on May 5, the day before Willie Mays and I share a birthday.

The show, which runs through July 8, will feature Fiorentino’s new ELITE original artwork and some of a project he named “There Is Only One — The Most Iconic Trading Cards of All Time.”

It will also have Fiorentino’s nature and wildlife paintings that have come back from museum shows over the past year.

Special VIP guests, including former athletes, will be there for the opening, which will also have giveaways plus food and drink.

After its run in Bernardsville, the show will proceed to the Mayo Center for the Performing Arts in Morristown and stay there through Aug. 22.

The New Jersey-based artist’s work chronicles not only baseball but all of sporting history in such vivid detail that it’s difficult to imagine him not bearing actual witness to his representations, all of which encompass more than a century’s worth of people and events.

His stunning watercolors are like a roadmap, taking sports fans and art enthusiasts alike on a journey that brings them from baseball’s deadball era of Ty Cobb to the modern era, featuring the likes of sluggers such as Mike Trout and Aaron Judge. Along the way there are stops that allow for visits with the likes of Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Reggie Jackson, and dozens of other greats who have mesmerized baseball fans.

“…there is new hope springing forth from the confluence of size issues, high prices and the inability for the majority of collectors to enjoy many of the most stunning sports cards in the hobby...Joe Drelich of East Coast Sports Marketing (ECSM) and artist James Fiorentino have combined to produce a new series of paintings entitled, “There Is Only One, the Most Iconic Trading Cards of All Time.

INSIDE The "Field of Dreams" House on Intentional Talk

“This is the poster I painted for a sports marketing company back in the day, when many Hall of Famers were playing on the field in a celebrity softball game.

I was invited at the time to take part in the event and couldn’t make it, but the limited edition giclees were signed by all the players (each of whom I had the opportunity to meet over the years. )

Was pretty cool to be watching a story on the ‘Field of Dreams’ house on MLB Network with my sons and see the poster hanging on the wall in the house!”

I HeART New Jersey: The Best Watercolor Artists

James Fiorentino is a watercolor artist who also has a place in baseball history. In fact, he is the youngest artist to ever be featured in the National Baseball Hall of Fame; he painted his likeness of Reggie Jackson at the age of 15.

Starting with private art lessons at the age of eight, James has painted almost every day for 25 years. His sport-themed watercolor paintings include the likenesses of athletes such as Derek Jeter, Michael Jordan, and Hulk Hogan. However, his signature style is unlike most watercolor art, and ends up looking more like a photo than a painting.

….James Fiorentino makes that bounty manifest in a startling medium watercolor of a Flemington farmhouse that’s crisp as a photograph. The wooden barn has been battered by the elements, and the tree is withered and autumn-bare, but the impression that the painting gives is one of great solidity and near-permanence. Like Lieberman’s dream of a winter’s night, this work speaks eloquently of perseverance.
